At our Braunschweig site, starting on November 1, 2026 we are looking to fill the following position in Department 4.5 (Applied Radiometry):

Research Scientist

Remuneration Group 13 TVöD Bund ○ for a fixed term until July 31, 2027○ Full-time

Your tasks:

Working Group 4.51, ‘Reflection and Transmission’, investigates how different materials reflect or transmit radiation across the spectrum from the ultraviolet to the near-infrared. To this end, highly accurate calibration methods for measuring the reflection and transmission properties of optical components are being developed and continuously improved. Clients and collaborative partners include, amongst others, the aerospace industry, the automotive industry, the printing and paper industry, pigment and materials manufacturers, and manufacturers of measuring instruments in the optical industry. As part of the EU-funded research project “xDDiff – Multidimensional optical diffusion for the measurement of appearance”, the aim is to determine the diffuse reflection and transmission properties of complex surfaces.

Your activities will include:
Completing work already underway, in particular the evaluation and interpretation of measurements of diffuse reflection/transmission properties (BRDF/BTDF)
Further developing existing measurement set-ups in terms of both hardware and software
Presenting the results at project meetings and scientific conferences in Germany and abroad, as well as preparing scientific publications
Preparing the final reports required by the project

Your profile:

A university degree (Diplom/Master’s) in physics, engineering, electrical engineering or a comparable subject
Strong experimental skills
Experience in the development and construction of optical apparatus
Experience in photometry and radiometry, particularly in measuring reflection and transmission properties
Experience in carrying out and evaluating BRDF and BTDF measurements is an advantage
Experience of participating in projects with an international consortium
Knowledge of metrology, measurement data analysis and uncertainty analysis
You have achieved B2 level in English and A2 level in German
A structured, independent and results-oriented approach to work
Strong teamwork and communication skills
You are willing to travel for work both in Germany and abroad
